BATTERIES FOR GOLF CARTS
Proper battery maintenance is a must for achieving optimum performance and longer battery life.
Inspection Guidelines:
Examine the outside of the golf cart battery. Look for cracks in the casing. The top of the battery post and connections should be clean, free of dirt, fluids and corrosion. Repair or replace any damage golf cart batteries
look for any fluids on or around batteries, if so this could be and indication that electrolyte is leaking out. Leaking golf cart batteries must be repaired or replaced
Check all battery cables and their connections. Look closely for loose or damaged golf cart parts. Battery cables should be free of corrosion any frayed, corroded, broken battery wires should be replaced.
Correct Torque for Battery Connections:
Wet cell or flooded Automotive 50-70 in-lbs
Side 70-90 in-lbs
Wing nut 95-105 in-lbs
LPT 95-105in-lbs
Stud 120-180 in-lbs
Golf Cart battery Testing:
Visual inspection alone is not sufficient to determine the overall health of the battery. Both open ? circuit Voltage (load tester) and specific gravity readings can give a good indication of the battery charge level of the golf cart, age, and health. Routine voltage and gravity checks will not only show the state of charge but also help spot signs of improper care, such as undercharging and over- watering, and also locate a bad battery.
Watering (Wet Cell or Flooded batteries only)
Flooded golf cart batteries need water. More importantly, watering must be done at the right time and the right amount of water or else the batteries performance and longevity suffers. Water should always be added after fully charging the battery of you?re golf cart. Prior to charging, there should be enough water to cover plates. Keeping the water at the correct level after a full charge will prevent having to worry about the water level at a different state charge.
Depending on you?re local climate, charging methods, applications etc.. Most battery professionals recommend that you check you?re batteries at least once a month till you get a feel how thirsty you?re batteries are.
Important things to know about you?re golf cart;
Do not let the plates get exposed to air. This will corrode the plates
Do not fill the water level in the filling well to the cap. This most likely will cause the battery to over flow acid. Creating a mess, and losing battery capacity.
Do not use water with a high mineral content. Use distilled or deonized water only.
Step by Step watering procedure:
Open the vent caps and look inside the fill wells.
Check electrolyte level, the minimum is at the top of plates.
If necessary add just enough water to cover the plates at this time.
Put batteries on a complete charge before adding any additional water.
Once charging is completed, open the vent caps and look inside the fill wells.
Add water until the electrolyte level is 1/8 inch below the bottom of fill well.
Clean, replace and tighten all vent caps.
***CAUTION***
The electrolyte is a solution of acid and water so skin contact should be avoided.
